I bought this 42"plasma for my parents back in 2010.  I'd like to get them a sound bar?  Does this model have ARC (Audio Return Channel)?  .  I'd like the volume to be controlled automatically by their existing remote.

I see some conflicting info linked from here http://www.insigniaproducts.com/products/sale/NS-42P650A11.html

This says yes-  use hdmi 2

Quick Setup Guide:

This has no mention of it in in the manual

User Manual:

• English

I also don't see any mention of ARC on a spec sheet.

You are correct. The quick setup guide does mention ARC and the manual does not. The manual however does show the same graphic showing how to connect devices it just does not have the explanation that the quick setup guide does. 

That being said, HDMI ARC should work fine for this setup. You could also use the digital optical cable or the 3.5mm audio out, though these may not allow the TV to control the volume. It is all going to come down to what connections the soundbar has.

The main thing is I'd like the volume to be controlled by their current remote. Hopefully it will work or I might need to get another sound bar with ARC.

I have a question along this same vein. I have this same model tv and would like to have the "variable" volume option I've seen on other threads (for other models) when connecting to my amp (Sonos ZP100) via the 3.5mm Y analog audio out so that I can control the volume on the external speakers. Is this an option on this model? If not, is there a work-around?

Unfortunately this model does not function like that. The only possibility to getting those functions onto one remote would be to use a universal remote.
