Trick or Treat? Growing up, I never understood that expression. Why would anyone trick if they could have a treat instead? This year though, it’s the pranking that has me excited. I’m an easy target for getting spooked, as all it takes is one scary movie for me to be on the look-out for things to go bump in the night for months. However, this year I’m turning the tables, and going to be the one doing the pranking.
As you can imagine, horror doesn’t make an appearance in my home much, so when it does, everyone is a bit on edge trying to push away superstitious thoughts. That’s when I got thinking: what can I get for some fun pranks to take advantage of us being scared, but I’ll also be able to enjoy year-round when Halloween season comes to an end?
I got a Chromecast and set it up to our TV when my boyfriend wasn’t home. Since it just plugs into an HDMI port in the back, it’s easy to hide, and it’s convenient as it works with Apple and Android phones.
We’re a few minutes into Annabelle Returns Home, when I get up to “make popcorn”. Little does he know I have my phone connected to the Chromecast, and can control the TV all the way from the other room.
That’s when the “paranormal activity” begins! I hit play, and when he goes to pause it, I quickly hit play again. That happens a few times before I rush over to ask him what’s going on. Luckily, I have blankets all over, so I was easily able to get under one and hit pause and play again under the covers so he wouldn’t get suspicious. Since Annabelle is based on a real doll that’s kept at the Warrens’ Occult Museum, even I’m starting to get a little freaked out while controlling the TV. Hopefully she appreciates a good prank! Since I’m already committed to the trick, I secretly start to adjust the volume to be louder whenever Annabelle is on screen.
Later that night, I lay awake trying to think of what my next prank should be. Suddenly, I’m pulled from my thoughts as my TV in the other room starts blaring. Slowly I get up and find that my TV is off, but my receiver is clearly playing a scene from Annabelle: Creation. I don’t know if my boyfriend figured out I was pranking him, or if it’s her, but I either way I think it’s time I go back to treats, not tricks!
