TV, 2nd monitor, laptop, rocketfish, HDMI

I have a Rocketfish HDMI splitter.  My laptop HDMI goes to the INPUT of the splitter, and the two OUTPUTs go to an HP monitor and a Samsung TV.

The display is the same on the monitor and TV, as expected.

However, if I power-off the HP monitor, the laptop stops outputting to HDMI port, the TV screen goes black, and the laptop display comes back on.

BUT: if I turn off the TV, the HP monitor still has the laptop output on it.

Why does turning off the monitor cause the laptop to think that there is no longer an HDMI device present?

Re: TV, 2nd monitor, laptop, rocketfish, HDMI

Hi Sam,

Thanks for asking.

RG-G1182, 1-in, 2-out HDMI splitter.

A couple of details: have monitor on, then turn TV on.  Monitor sometimes goes blank, then comes back.  Sometimes I have to use the mouse to wake up the laptop.  But sometimes, with the monitor on, if I turn the TV on, there's no impact on the monitor.

Monitor on, TV on.  Turn TV off: monitor goes blank, laptop thinks that there is no HDMI connected, reverts to laptop screen.

Re: TV, 2nd monitor, laptop, rocketfish, HDMI

Hello Seitchik,

I personally use a version of this same splitter in my HT set up!  Sam’s currently away from his desk, but I’d be happy to jump in to see how I can help you.

Can you please check the display settings on your laptop? There should be an option to ensure that it always displays and doesn’t sleep. Also, the support materials on Rocketfish’s website shares to double check that the CEC functions are disabled on all the connected devices. Let me know if those fixes don’t resolve your issue and we’d be happy to see what other troubleshooting we can recommend.

Re: TV, 2nd monitor, laptop, rocketfish, HDMI

Hi Mariah,

I tried the CEC functions both ways on the TV.  But, there was no way to enable/disable the CEC function on my monitor, and I think that is the issue.  When I turn off the monitor, it tells the laptop "no HDMI" and for some reason, having the TV on, even with CEC enabled, doesn't overcome that.

So...I gave up and bought a Chromecast.

Thanks for your help.
