If he already has a TV with an HDMI input I would suggest a Roku

My husband and I have a Roku TV in the bedroom and its easy to arrange the apps and remove shortcuts so only you have the apps you want on the home screen.
While I agree with @bobberuchi on the Roku suggestion I'm not sure it would be good if he may not be capable of changing the input to the Roku. At least with the roku built in, its an all in one center.
