i called 1-888-899-7609 the samsung help line.
and gave them the seriel number, model number and was told it was a capacitor issue.
they offered me a free service repair. they will be out in a few days to fix my set.
try calling samsung before you call a repair guy... they might fix it for free.

After owning and using my 59" for 5 years (almost exactly), my television started this last night. (May of 2011 Manufacture) Model # PN59D6500DFXZA
Out of nowhere, it turned itself off, then it tried to come back on, getting to the chime, and displaying the source information in the upper left corner, before shutting down again. After looking on the internet, this seems to be a known issue... The timing for the cycle is: 15 seconds from initial plug-in, to screen back off. Approximately 5-10 seconds of all lights off.. Then from trying to come back on, to power-off (second cycle) 10 seconds.
In calling Best Buy, which were very helpful, the lady tells me she hears this issue to this day, "quite often".
I have submitted a service request from Samsung. I will be calling Samgung with the above number, mentioning this thread. I am very dissapointed.

Hey HuntSpear,
It's very unlikely that Samsung will provide any options given how long you have owned the TV, but I guess it never hurts to try.

Thank you for the quick reply... As the previous poster suggested, Samsung basically considers it written off. Offering no help at all. Even after asking to be elevated to the super secret special customer service ( :-) ) . He went on to reassure me that 5 years and 8 days, was an accepitable lifespan for capacitors. 8-|
In the process of "dismounting" the TV from the wall, I did disconnect everything (BluRay, DirectTV, Amazon Fire) and tried just powering up stand alond. Same result, chime, Source info (HDMI2), and off again. 15 seconds from first plugging in, to lights out, then about 5-7 seconds of black, then Splash screen/chime then source, then lights off (10 seconds for the second, and subsequesnt cycles.) I tried this direct to an outlet, then tried it again on another circuit to be sure.
Thank you for any assistance.

Plasma TVs play by different rules ... Suggest trying with all external devices disconnected (to rule out an HDMI control issue), if still no good, next likely cause is a shorted buffer IC on 1 of the Y Buffer boards along left side as viewed from the back with cover removed. *BEWARE OF CAP DISCHARGE* sounds like you've already been in there, but still... we do not recommend service by untrained repair personnel. A heat stressed / damaged possible burnt or cracked buffer IC on the long thin driver boards could be your culprit. If you noticed and sudden scan lines flickering or not responding just before the power failure, this may also be a good indication of a buffer IC failure. Worse case is there is actually a panel grid short in which case the entire panel may require replacement (there can still be other causes though)... in more rare cases, data issues like communication to the user buttons or remote sensor can also result in shutdown or restarts. Hope this helps!
