As someone who loves to relax by putting on a good show, I know how frustrating it can be when your TV isn't working with the surround sound as expected.
Based on what you've told me, it does sound like it would be best to bypass the ARC function. Instead you can run a dedicated optical cable from the TV to the receiver. You would then want to turn off your TV speakers. To do that, go the Home menu and select Settings. Then select Display & Sounds, where it should show the option of Select Audio Output. Once there, select TV Speakers and change the setting to off.
