TV Typically most TV's have speakers and produce their own sound. Inside the TV is an amplifier that sends a powered signal to the TV speakers.
Receiver, the words receiver and amplifier can be interchanged and quite often are. Essentially the same thing. But a receiver is built to accommodate a number of inputs. An amplifier simply supplies power to the receivers outputs and is inside a receiver (typically)
If you want surround sound or simply more sound you have options
It call all be called Home Theater.
Basic. Two speaks or Two speaker and a sub woofer.
Less basic. You can get systems that quite a few speakers.
You hook your TV audio out to the Receiver input. Your receiver will have at a minimum 2 outputs. Left and right speakers. Most receivers (that are referred to as home theater) you can but today will support 5 speakers and a subwoofer or more. You will see things like 5.1, 7.1, 9.1. The first number is the number of speakers you can attach and the second is the number of subwoofers you can attach.
I would suggest going into the store and looking at the open box area. I purchased a Yamaha receiver last fall for my secondary TV. I was able to get a receiver originally priced at $450 for $79
