LG Soundbar to older Magnavox TV

I just bought an LG LAS454B Soundbar. It comes with an optical cable to connect directly from the soundbar to the television. It also has a standard aux output.

Unfortunately, the 2009 Magnavox TV we own does not have an optical cable input. Rather, the TV has the old school red/white/yellow inputs and a few HDMI inputs.

What's the best option in this situation?

Should I use an "analog to digital audio converter adapter"? (And if so, recommendation for something < $20?)

Or am I OK using a simple stereo 3.5mm to stereo RCA Y cable connector? (The seemingly easier and cheaper option.)

Any help would be appreciated!

Are you watching stuff from a cable box?  Is there an optical port there?
