Insignia TV will not power on with USB drive connected

Hello,

I have an NS-32DF310NA19 with a PNY 64 Gb thumb drive plugged into the USB port. This drive has videos only (MP4) and only the files that the TV installs to make the thumb drive function. There are only folders on the root part of this drive, no files.

When the drive is plugged in the TV more often than not will not respond to the remote to turn it on, requiring us to power cycle. We've tried leaving the TV on and after ti goes to 'sleep' pressing the Home key to get it started but that has not resolved the issue. This is not an issue if the thumb drive is removed. I've looked thru the menus to see if there was any sort of 'Boot Order' and could find none. The only use of this TV invovles the exercise videos on the thumb drive. The power cord is too difficult for everyone to reach to power cycle the TV to get it to turn on. It is also too difficult for everyone to reach the USB drive to unplug and plug back in again.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Regards,

Randy

Welcome to the Best Buy Forums!

Hi randykFireTV. Thank you for taking the time to stop by our community forums. I understand your frustration with the drive not working with the TV. I would be happy to look into this, to see if we can figure out the cause. Did this start recently or has this been on going issue? There are times when this issue can be caused by dust or if the port is faulty.

Thank you for the rapid response. Just to clarify, the drive works fine and we can access and play the files with no issue. The difficulty is the TV will not power on with the drive plugged in. We have to disconnect the power from the outlet, count to 10, then plug it back in to turn the TV on all the while the USB flash drive is still connected.

Re: Insignia TV will not power on with USB drive connected

This is just my opinion but I don't know why people are using the USB ports in televisions anymore when you can actually cast your laptop or device to the TV without having to go through all the USB port nonsense. I have a 32" Westinghouse Roku TV in the bedroom and sometimes I cast family videos from the laptop to the TV to watch and it works out great.

Maybe your technology has that built inside?

Re: Insignia TV will not power on with USB drive connected

Good morning. It's used out of convenience. Casting in this case is a bit impracticle. I would have to place the phone on the floor with me as there are moments during the session that have to be paused and resumed duirng the exercises. Waking the phone to pause a video vs pressing the center button is cumbersome. I also don't want to subject my partner to going thru the motions of casting. She and technology are not the best of friends.

I had previously stored the videos on my NAS however this proved to be somewhat unreliable. Perhaps with this TV it will work better. This will be my remidial step should an answer here not be forthcoming.

USB ports are plug & play. And the difficulty here is not the USB. All the videos run perfectly. The problem is the TV will not turn on while the USB is plugged in.

Thank you for chiming in.

Re: Insignia TV will not power on with USB drive connected

I completely understand. I would recommend resetting the TV, or doing a factory reset if possible. If the TV does not turn on only when the USB drive is being used, then it could be a firmware issue. I know you mentioned not seeing a reboot option, however most model TVs will have an option like that. From Home go into Settings, and look for an option that says Device and Software, in here will be the option to reset, etc. If it's not there, that's fine. You may also try this option; when you're in Settings go to Display and Sounds and ensure all the features are enabled. Let me know if any of those work for you.

Re: Insignia TV will not power on with USB drive connected

Thank you Kadian. I have gone thru all the standard rememdies prior to posting this concern. However based on your reposnse I have changed the power on option from 'Home' to "Last input'. I cannot hurt to try.

I report the results either way.

Re: Insignia TV will not power on with USB drive connected

It's been a few days and here is what I have to report back. The TV turns on everytime I try it. Remember, the only change I made was to have it turn on to the last input used. Which, by the way, it does not do.

It makes absolutely no sense why this would resolve the issue but since a more logical solution is not forthcoming from the group I will close this ticket. If it starts the same trouble again I'll set it on fire and replace it.

Merry Christmas everyone!
