We just bought a very basic Sony Dvd Player (Model: DVPSR210P) to replace our old DVD/VHS combo. We've hooked it up to our little flat screen tv in the bedroom which is about 1 yr old; it's an off-brand my mom gave to us after winning it as a door prize but worked beautifully with the older player.
The Sony player came with the red/yellow/white A/V cable; this is only way to connect it to anything. It's very easy to use but we noticed a HUM or BUZZING whenever a DVD is playing. It fades at times then gets loud again at scene transitions, and of course it is very obvious during "quiet" scenes. I tried moving the TV around in the cabinet, tried reposition the DVD player, but these only seem to disrupt the buzz for a few seconds, then it's back.
Even though it was an inexpensive player, this noise is pretty irritating, especially when watching a quieter film. Could the cables be bad out of box? Is it the player? We don't THINK it's the TV b/c it had great audio when used with our old player (this connected with a regular cable-tv style cable, no a/v). Any help is appreciated!

First step I'd try is connecting it to a different TV. If there are no issues, it's likely the TV. If there are issues, it's definitely the player.
From a google search, I found the recommendation of switching the Audio DRC in the menu to "TV Mode", which may help. If not, I'd have it exchanged. If you bought it at Best Buy, you have a 30-day return/exchange period.

Will give the "Audio DRC - TV Mode" suggestion a try; unfortunately the only other tv is an older "tube" model (Samsung) and only has a single cable-tv cable connection on the back. No other a/v connectors. Not sure it would be worth getting a convertor just to test it out.

Friend, neighbor, or relative nearby?
If not, I would just take it in for an exchange. Chances are, it's the player itself.

A few things to try:

I bought the same very basic Sony DVD player and had the same exact issue so it's definitely not the TV. And I also have tried this DVD player with two diiferent TVs with the exact same issue.

Hi Friends!
rwillen pointed out some great options to try to get your new Sony DVD Player to work. I would like add to it by recommending to try different composite cables. If the cable has a short in it, these types of issues can occur.
While I was looking into this, it doesn't appear that this humming issue is an known by Sony directly. If you continue to have this humming issue, I'd recommend reaching out to Sony to see if they have any updates for it.
For clarification our Return and Exchange Policy can be found here, and it starts at 15 days if you're a core customer.
Best of luck! And please let us know if any of the troubleshooting works.

I know you may want a brand name but I've had the Insignia player from Best Buy that sells for $29.99 and have not had one problem since owning it in Summer of 2014.
Here is the link to the DVD player http://www.bestbuy.com/site/insignia-dvd-player-black/7456096.p?id=1218846428144&skuId=7456096
