Hey there, Dexiner.
Thanks for reaching out to us here on the Best Buy Forums. I would be happy to assist with this. How is your cable box hooked up to your TV?

It may be an HD box, but it does not support HDCP 2.2. What that is, is a copy protection to make sure people can't pirate TV shows and movies. TVs are all made with it now, but HD equipment made a while ago do not support it. That is why the TV won't accept the signal coming via HDMI. I would recommend contacting AT&T and getting a new U-Verse box that is updated, and that should solve any issues you have.

No, I understand. You may have to adjust the picture/aspect ratio settings on the cable box itself, depending on what kind of TV you had their prior, if it was not a flat screen with the 16:9 aspect ratio. If it was a square TV with a 4:3 aspect ratio, that could be why it is messed up on your current TV, and if you haven't, look in the settings on the cable box and see if you can find any mention of the aspect ratio or resolution and that could also solve the issue.
