Miracast video receiver not working after firmware upgrade

Hi Everyone,

I followed the instructions to the "T" on how to do the firmware upgrade for the Miracast video receiver dongle. I bought RC-WD301 and it came with Firmware version 1.0 and I tried to install version 2.0 from: http://www.rocketfishproducts.com/cms/software-updates/RF-WFD301/Rocketfish-2.0.zip

The displayed screen (on my laptop) when it was finished reported:

  Firmware upgrade completed

  NOTE: device stopped

NOTE: Code-boot system for changes to take affect

I waited 3 minutes then did a cold boot and I see the output changes from "not connected" to 720p60 however nothing ever comes up on the screen anymore (just blank)....

Pressing and holding down the reset while cold-booting does not return me to the firmware update screen so I don't know what to do now, HELP!!!.

Steven.

Re: Miracast video receiver not working after firmware upgrade

Hello shartley,

Welcome to Community@Rocketfish™!

If the Miracast receiver will no longer come on screen after the update I would recommend returning with your RF-WFD301 and a copy of your receipt to your place of purchase in order to pursue the possibility of warranty repair or replacement.  The firmware on the website is only for RF-WFD301 within the Mac address range of  0090A2FF0071 - 0090A2FF0778 and  0090A2FF0779 - 0090A2FF13F8.

Re: Miracast video receiver not working after firmware upgrade

Picked one up yesterday for $30 to use with my NVIDIA SHIELD but I can't seem to get it to work. It just gives me an authentication error, which in my experience is either because the device lacks an HDCP chip or the connecting the device does not support it over Miracast.

The user guide shows more options than I am presented with, such as HDCP options. I believe its not connecting due to HDCP issues, which have an option to disable shown in the user guide but not the device itself.

I saw the firmware 2.0 posting but my device is not within that Mac range so I haven't tried it yet.

For reference, my MAC is 0090A2DB8695 and its model RF-WFD301, which appears to be an earlier version than what supports firmware 2.0. Should I keep trying or return it and try to hunt down a 0090A2F MAC?

Re: Miracast video receiver not working after firmware upgrade

Hello james_18,

Welcome to Community@Rocketfish™!

The RF-WFD301 is capable of 1080p.  The content you are displaying on your connected device will need to be sent at 1080p in order for it to be displayed that way.  If you are viewing standard definition content on the phone it will be shown that way on the television.

The Miracast receiver should turn itself off and reboot twice during the firmware installation.  The firmware update is intended to fix an issue caused by various software updates from select services providers for the Samsung Galaxy S3.  Those updates caused the connection from those Samsung devices to disconnect after approximately 1 minute from the RF-WFD301 Miracast receiver.

If you are not having an issue with your Samsung Galaxy S3 disconnecting after 1 min you will not need the firmware update.  If you are having that issue then follow the steps below.

Step 1 - You must make sure that the version you have is the correct one for the update.  If your device is not in the Mac Address range shown below do not install the firmware update.

Confirm that the MAC address on the device is in the range below:

MAC:0090A2FF0071 - 0090A2FF0778

MAC:0090A2FF0779 - 0090A2FF13F8

Step 2 - Remove USB power from HDTV

Step 3 - Press and hold the Rocketfish WPS Button on the side of the receiver.

Step 4 - Plug in the USB power cable

Step 5 - Continue to hold the WPS button down and count to 30 -- the Firmware update screen appears.

Step 6 - Follow the directions on the screen by using a Windows PC with Internet explorer installed.

NOTE: Use a lightly loaded system (DO NOT Have lots of mail or office/productivity applications running)

Step 7 - Use Internet explorer http://192.168.16.1/

Step 8 - Connect to WiFi-Video Receiver

Step 9 - On the webpage, for new file, Select the file firmware_sts.2.0.201306272059.REL2-MR1.img

NOTE: Don’t interfere with your browser or let your machine fall asleep during this period of time.

Step 10 - Upload times for the new firmware file is about 1 minute, don't let your system fall asleep

or your network roam to connect to a new network during this period of time

  •  The system will download the firmware file
  • When completed, it will reboot
  • The system will say "System firmware update in progress, do not power off"
  • The system will reboot, and when starting, will print "Loading..."

Your Miracast Receiver should now have the latest firmware version on it.

Re: Miracast video receiver not working after firmware upgrade

Hello tuanies,

Welcome to Community@Rocketfish™!

The first release of the Miracast did not come with the HDCP keys that the later release has.  The first release usually comes in a white box while the second release comes in a black box.  I have forwarded your issue on to our engineering team to see what additional help they can provide.  I will keep you updated as I receive them.

Re: Miracast video receiver not working after firmware upgrade

Dear Cory-RF,

Please keep this thread updated as I(and probably others) also would like to know how to set  HDCP setting on my white boxed dongle.

By the way, it seems that all of the BestBuy stores sell white boxed version of the dongle.

Is black boxed dongle available somwehere ?

Thank you!

Mark

Re: Miracast video receiver not working after firmware upgrade

Hi,

What I've learned is if you order from BestBuy.com you only get White box versions of the dongle and if you go to some stores you might be able to find the black box version but they have the same product ID and no indication of HDCP vs non-HDCP (as far as I know since I have yet to fond a black box version). This is, in my opinion, very poor marketing and product placement on the job of BestBuy and Rocketfish. HDCP vs non-HDCP should be two separate produces and the non-HDCP version priced half the HDCP version since it will NOT  work with many new devices like the Galaxy S4 and even cannot play commercial content from NEXUS-4 and NEXUS-10.

PLEASE ROCKETFISH CHANGE YOUR PACKAGING AND PRODUCT LABELING!

Steven.

Re: Miracast video receiver not working after firmware upgrade

OK looks like BestBuy already is starting to wake up and they are now selling what I assume is the non-HDCP version for 30$...

Re: Miracast video receiver not working after firmware upgrade

Any chance we can get an RMA to get a black box version? The store I went to only had white box versions.
