Blackberry make some very good smart phones but they take a little getting used to. One thing I want to throw out to people is make sure your programs are closing all the way. If you just use the back button it doesn't actually close the program it still loads data and uses battery. Make sure you use the menu key, scroll to the bottom of the menu and select close.
A way to check if this is may be causing a batter issue for you go your home screen with all the icons, hit the menu button and select "switch applications." In this screen you will see all of your open applications and you can re-enter the application and close it. Just remember there will be some Blackberry system essentials running. (BB Messenger, Home Screen, Browser, Phone, and Messages)
