Hello kelwayne7980,

What generation the iPod is depends on which one you're wanting to buy.  The iPod shuffle and iPod Touch are both in their second generation.  iPod Classic is the sixth generation of that line and the iPod Nano is in its fourth generation.

If it's a touch it's easy to tell, they have external speakers and a sound toggle on the left side. Since you'll be purchasing you can also tell by the packaging. The 2nd is in a clear/white case letting you see the unit. The 1st is in the grey box with Lennon on the picture.

Not very many stores carry the 1st gen anymore.
