Would a receiver work to bring in more music stations?

A number of factors are involved. Number one being where your are located relative to available radio stations. 

A reciever is actually a term for an audio device that is set up to RECEIVE Video and or audio signals from multiple devices.  Most receivers have a radio receiver built into them. 

However, having an antenna is the biggest factor.  

if you go to radio-locator.com you can enter your zip code to see stations you should be able to get.  I did mine and there are a lot of stations.  But some of them are quite a ways away and I cannot get them inside my house but I can in my car.  

If you are just wanting something that will sit on your counter Best Buy has a good selection of just radios.  Many of which will also have accommodations for CD or an external music device like an iPod.

They use a term from the 70's and 80's for these.  Boomboxes

However, if you would like to expand on that and would like to play your TV audio through a receiver that is a fine option as well.  

If your transistor radio does not have an antenna that most certainly may be effecting your ability to get radio stations.

Thank you so much for your help. I have a handicapped son who "only likes the transister radio" for his intertainment(beieve me we have tried others). I took the antenna off so he wouldnt poke himself in the eye (he is visually ipaired) . He only gets a couple stations on his radio and is always searching for more. I have looked and looked trying to find something that might stick on the window or set on the dresser that would pull more radio stations in but they all seem to have to be hooked to the radio or it is unclear to me if they dont. The paticular radio he uses is the only type he will have anything to do with. We have tried plug in type radios but it's been a no go. I will search to find if there are more radio stations in our area. Thank you for that idea! Is there anything such as a rubber flexiable antenna that I could put on his radio? I'm just searching for anything that would improve his enjoyment but there really may not be anything out there.

I completely understand, I have a friend I grew up with in a similar situation.  

Actually the radio I have on my desk the antenna is a 6 foot long wire antenna.

You may be able to attach a wire to the antenna stub on his existing radio. 

Copper stranded would work best. 

There are antenna plates you can get that are just a square flat rectangle but you radio may not have the proper attachments. I would try the copper wire attachment first.

Thank you for the reply. I'm not trying to be difficult but he would get wrapped up in anything connected to his radio. He is somwhat mobile but cannot walk and he also has seizures. I hate to sound stupid but I really dont know anything about what I'm trying to do. If I put a radio with an antenna in his window would the transister be able to pull off it? Maybe the only answer is an antenna on his which is not safe so, I wil just have to be happy with that. Thank you for taking the time.

Well of the wire antenna is just taped on with electricians tape it should just be able to be attached again if he pulled it off.

you might be able to find a device with an internal anteanna.  don't quite have the range but may work if he is willing to use the new radio.
