So for several years now, my best buy account has had the completely wrong name. I'm not sure how it happene, but my guess is that somebody else signed up for an account using the wrong e-mail address (mine), and then later I logged on with the recovered password. As the name is the ONLY field you can't edit, how can I change it?

We take our customers' privacy seriously, so updating the name is not a capability available to customers. In some circumstances, we will be able to update the name on an account, as outlined in the post below.
