On Feburary 3rd I recieved and email telling me that my points had been converted to rewards certificates. I went to the best buy website and found that someone must have gotten access to my account because I was short 5000 points and someone had purchased 2 giftcards using them. I contacted the best buy help line to let them know about the issue and get my points back. The customer service rep was somewhat helpfull but told me I needed to contact the store in Texas where whomever used the points (I'm in Indiana) and to contact my local law enforcement. At no point did the CS rep offer or mention the used points even though that was one of the first things I mentioned when she answered. What is the point of me making a police report when as far as I can see it will be a low priority for them and I still loose the points no mater what?

Receiving an email that a reward certificate was issued, and then finding it subsequently redeemed without your authorization would be disconcerting to say the least. I'm glad you reached out right away to make us aware of the experience and to seek guidance on what your next steps should be.
While you may certainly contact your local law enforcement to report the incident, there's not much the store would be able to assist you with from a point standpoint. Furthermore, any information they provided regarding the person who redeemed your reward would need to be provided to law enforcement. With that said, I would strongly encourage you to reset your password to BestBuy.com and the associated email account. This should help secure your account, as generally one must be logged into BestBuy.com to generate a reward certificate from banked points.
