Reward Certificate SCAM

[ Edited ]

I am a Best Buy Elite member, and my rewards points were incorrectly issued as 2x $65 Reward Certificates rather than being "banked".  On December 31, I talked to the Customer Service Manager in-store in Tucson AZ to save my rewards, and he called MyBestBuy Rewards with me to have my reward certificates saved.  I listened to him on speakerphone CONFIRM that I could call back in to activate my Reward Certificates.

Today, I was going to BestBuy for my next purchase, and I called to activate my points.  The Mexico City service rep told me my points had already been re-issued as Reward Certificates, which had expired a week or two ago.  This is incorrect - the Customer Service Manager in-store verified I would be able to use them at this time in the future by calling in.  I was escalated to Supervisor Joe L from Rewards Department in Mexico City, who was extremely rude and hung up on me.

It seems this is a common scam, so here is the direct link to file a complaint about BestBuy with the BBB of Minnesota and North Dakota, where BestBuy is headquarted:

{removed per forum guidelines}

I'll re-post this message to Reddit in case anyone else is having problems with their Rewards being incorrectly issued and revolked.

I'll also be going to the store to complain in-person.

Re: Reward Certificate SCAM

Hello, icv60d,

Thanks for joining the Best Buy Community forums. Banking points is a great option our Elite and Elite Plus customers have.  It is just that, however, an option that needs to be set up.

I'd b happy to review your account for you to see if we can get that swapped over to bank points for you, and to confirm if those points should have been banked in the first place.

Can you please send me a private message by using the link in my signature below my post? If you include your name, email address, phone number, and My Best Buy member number, I can see what's possible here.

Sincerely,

Re: Reward Certificate SCAM

Thanks Kyle. I thought the Customer Service Manager in-store set it up as saving my points, and that's why I was supposed to call back in to activate them?

Re: Reward Certificate SCAM

Hi, icv60d,

First off, thanks for sending that private message along. I'll be replying shortly.

As for what you were told in the store, it sounds like there was some miscommunication. Stores do not have the ability to change point banking preferences. It needs to be done online on our web site.

As I said, I'll shortly be replying to your private message to go over some details about your account.

Sincerely,
