Return an item you used a promotion certificate with? No problem! But you forfeit your certificate!

I returned the lackluster PS Classic console unbeknownst to me I used a promotional $50 reward certificate to purchase.

When I returned it in store the CS agent said my certificate points would go back to my acocunt in 3-4 weeks.

When they still hadn't shown up today I called and was told my certificate value was 0 points so nothing was refunded from the certificate.  I couldn't understand why considering when I looked up the certificate it was for spending $500 outside of Bestbuy (and I never use my BBY MC outside of the store because I can use other cards that are a better return) but 10% is 10% and I'm very loyal to the brand.

Well turns out NOTHING can be done Even though I pointed out that certificates have no cash value and it's literally a complete dis-service to the customer.  I lost $50 in value from a Bestbuy promo certificate.  I'd be happy to say Bestbuy took care of me if they had made an exception however they didn't.

Bestbuy - I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.  You always have the opportunity to make things right for the customer Especially for someone with Elite Plus status.

Other customers - Beware Bestbuy CC offers.  If you buy something and return it because it's a bad product you may lose the value spent.

Re: Return an item you used a promotion certificate with? No problem! But you forfeit your certif...

Hello kruton6,

Welcome to the forum and thank you for reaching out to us! It's fantastic to hear you received a promotional $50 certificate and redeemed it on a PS Classic. There's been a lot of buzz around the console, so it is disheartening to hear it may not have lived up to the hype for you. When purchases don't work out, in most cases certificates are returned in just a few short days.

This doesn't mean there aren't exceptions though. Promotional certificates are awarded without any change to points, meaning no points are awarded to be converted to the certificate. As mentioned in our My Best Buy FAQ, it is actually the points that are returned, not the certificate itself. As promotional certificates are intended to be one-time use, and no points are awarded for them, they would not be credited upon a return or cancellation. For more details on this, you may review our article below.

Return or Cancellation - Where is my reward certificate?

I'm sorry if this information caught you off guard. I'm sure it only soured your experience further if you were unaware of this, especially after being let down by the product. I would be happy to review your My Best Buy membership though, to confirm where the offer came from as you seemed a bit confused on that. Please keep an eye on your inbox in the top right corner of the page for my private message.

Sincerely,

Re: Return an item you used a promotion certificate with? No problem! But you forfeit your certif...

I have responded to your PM.

When I was issued the certificate it was not labeled as "Promotional" I still have the email, it just stated "Shopping with you My Best Buy Credit Card just paid you back..."

I still have the original email.

My online order receipt and in store return receipt don't mention the certificate at all except the receipt says Discount: -$50.00.

When I called they just told me I used a promotional certificate and I get nothing since I returned the product as there is no RZ point value on the cert.

I was hoping to use the points from that cert on a game instead since the PS Classic was not great but it sounds like I'm out of luck. Let me know if there's anything you can do.

Tasha was able to make this right.

Buyer beware that it's hard to distinguish promotional certificates from regular ones in the current system.

Hopefully bestbuy can make this easier for everyone in the future.
