My Best Buy™ Tier Expiration FAQ

BANNER1.png

At the end of every February, members who did not requalify for Elite and Elite Plus status during the prior calendar year (1/1 - 12/31) will have their current tier status expire. That change will likely impact the benefits a member receives from the My Best Buy™ program afterward, and while not all members will be affected, we are only a few days away from March.  Here is what you need to know:

Q. What amount did I have to spend to requalify?
A. To requalify for Elite status, you would need to have spent $1,500. For Elite Plus, the total is $3,500.

Q. What timeframe did I have to spend this amount?
A. Qualifying purchases are based on a calendar year, so purchases would need to have been made between January 1st and December 31st of 2019.

Q. What if I’m an Elite Plus member, and I only spent enough to requalify for Elite?
A. Your Elite Plus status will expire and will be switched over to Elite.

Q. Will my purchases made while Elite or Elite Plus still receive that tier’s benefits?
A. Yes and no. While points should be awarded based on your tier status at the time of purchase, the return/exchange period you are eligible for would be based off your tier status at the time of the request.

Q. I’ve been banking my points as an Elite/Elite Plus member, which is expiring. What will happen to my banked points when my Elite/Elite Plus status expires?
A. Unless you requalified for a tier status that receives the banking benefit, any banked points in your rewards account will be automatically converted into certificates at the $5 level. A certificate will generally be valid for a period of 60 days unless noted otherwise on the certificate.

Q. I’m sure that I purchased enough during the previous calendar year to requalify for Elite or Elite Plus status. Why did my tier status expire?
A. Chances are some of your purchases may not have counted towards requalifying for Elite or Elite Plus status, including any portion of a purchase that is paid for with a gift card or certificate.  Also, sales tax is excluded, so keep that in mind when reviewing your own purchase history.

Q. I have a My Best Buy™ Visa credit card and believe to have spent more than the required amounts if I combine my Best Buy purchases with purchases made outside of Best Buy. This means I requalified, right?
A. No. In-order to requalify, you must spend the required amounts either solely at Best Buy OR solely using your My Best Buy™ Visa card.  Those totals are not combined.  For example, an eligible purchase made at Best Buy using your personal debit card would not be combined with a purchase made outside of Best Buy with your My Best Buy™ Visa card.

Q. I’m still certain that I should have requalified. What do I do?
A. If you’re absolutely certain that you should have requalified for Elite or Elite Plus status, then we'll be delighted to double check your rewards account for you. We will make sure you have the correct tier status.

Q. I have multiple rewards accounts, and between them I made enough purchases to requalify. Can you ensure I keep my tier status?
A. We’ll be happy to look into possibly merging the rewards accounts, and go from there. Check out our article here regarding how to merge rewards accounts. Note: rewards accounts under different names (even spouses) cannot be merged.

Q. I was incredibly close to requalifying, but didn’t quite make it. Can you ensure I keep my tier status as a customer service gesture?
A. In fairness to all members, you must meet the spending requirements to requalify. We would be unable to make an exception.

Q. I’ve been an Elite/Elite Plus member for several years, but admittedly didn’t requalify. Can I have a freebie for this year as a customer service gesture?
A. Again, in fairness to all members, you must meet the spending requirements to requalify and keep your current tier status.
