Luckily, we have a tool available on BestBuy.com for just such an occasion. This tool will allow you to report a purchase as "missing" if it for whatever reason wasn't attached to your rewards account at the start. I have used it many times in the past to report my own purchases. You should have no problem reporting your recent purchase as long as it is not already attached to a rewards account, is not more than 180 days old, and you had an active rewards account prior to the purchase. I have provided a link to a guide below that should come in handy.
