Best Buy decided to not allow banking the earned rewards points any more

Today as a surprise I got a rewards certificate issued to me, despite my settings of banking points.  As I call customer service I was notified that because I came short of $1500 in purchases last year, I am not allowed any longer to bank the points for redemption in the future.

This is really sad, as now it does not give me an incentive to drive to Best Buy to buy what I can buy in Staples or office Depot, or any other competing store.

Why bother if the points cannot be saved for a future purchase?  Issuing small certificates with short redemption periods, is the same as not giving any points at all.

Re: Best Buy decided to not allow banking the earned rewards points any more

Hello patriciapedraza,

Thanks for reaching out to us about your My Best Buy™ membership!  I know I’d be surprised if I was accustomed to banking my points and noticed a certificate had been issued on its own.  Had I discovered this was due to my tier status changing, I’m sure I’d want some answers, too.

It sounds like you’re already aware of why this may have happened.  At the end of every February, My Best Buy™ members who have not requalified for their current tier statuses during the prior calendar year will see their current tier statuses expire.  For members who were previously at the Elite or Elite Plus tier, their benefits would change to match those of our Core tier.  This would include the ability to bank your points, as called out in our FAQ below.

Q. I’ve been banking my points as an Elite/Elite Plus member, which is expiring. When my Elite/Elite Plus status expires, what will happen to my banked points?
A. Core members don’t receive the benefit of banking points. Unless you requalified for a status that receives this benefit, any banked points will be automatically converted to certificates.

I’m sorry for any disappointment this may cause, but we certainly appreciate your feedback.  If you have any specific questions about your account, feel free to send me a private message that includes the below information.
