Best Buy Reward Certificates

[ Edited ]

Hello all!! I’m looking to purchase a new TV using the Best Buy credit card which will earn me 10% rewards points (first purchase). I’m trying to figure out if the rewards points could be used towards the purchase of the Geek Squad protection plan for this tv?

If this is possible, how would I go about pulling this off? Sounds like the rewards certificates wouldn’t be available to me until 16 days after my purchase and my return window closes after 15 days. Also, I understand you can only add on/purchase the protection plan during this return period, correct? However, my tv will cost more than the $1,500 requirement to become an elite member. Would this mean I have a full 30 days to add on/purchase the protection plan since my return window would now be 30 days?

Finally, if none of the above is an option, can the reward certificates be used to purchase Apple gift cards (in store)?

Thanks to all for the support!! - Josh {removed per forum guidelines}

Re: Best Buy Reward Certificates

Hi there, Josh,

Welcome to our community, and thanks for considering Best Buy for your upcoming home theater purchase!  Smiley Happy  You ask some great questions.

Purchasing a Geek Squad Protection (GSP) plan is always something I encourage, especially on something so large and potentially expensive as a TV.  If it’s not attached to the purchase when you originally buy the product, you can typically add a GSP plan to qualifying products at any time within your return period.  With that said, it can can take up to 20 days for points to post to your account, assuming the terms of the 10% Back in Points offer are met.  You’re welcome to review the resources I’ve linked below for more information on this new cardholder offer.

You are correct that, if your pre-tax total from this purchase is higher than $1500, it would push you over the spending requirement to reach Elite status in the My Best Buy™ program.  The timeframe in which you can request a return or exchange is based on the status of your membership at the time the request is made, so you should have the full 30-day Elite return window to add on a GSP plan to your TV if you choose that route.

Finally, rewards certificates and Best Buy Gift Cards cannot be used to purchase third-party gift cards online or in-store.  Limitations on the purchase and redemption of gift cards and rewards certificates can be found in the resources below as well.

Hopefully this clarifies a few things for you, but if you have any further questions, please let me know and I will do my best to get you some answers.

Re: Best Buy Reward Certificates

Sam,

Thanks so much for your help and Info.!

Just to clarify, Best Buy reward certificates can be combined and used torwards the purchase of the TV protection plan as long as I’m within the TVs return window?

Lastly, once I purchase my TV for 1,500 +, I’ll instantly become an elite member and have a 30 day return window for that TV?

This would give me the 20 or so days needed for the reward certificates to post to my account so I can then turn around and use them towards the purchase of the TV protection plan.

Thanks again for your help! - Josh

Re: Best Buy Reward Certificates

Hey Josh,

Yes, you should be able to use your rewards certificate to pay for your Geek Squad Protection (GSP) plan as long as it is not a recurring charge.  As for when your account would be upgraded to Elite status, that all depends on when the points from your purchase post to your account.  Typically, it can take up to 20 days as I mentioned above for everything to process after a purchase is made, so it wouldn't be an instant change on the day you make your purchase.  Once the points have processed, though, your account should then be automatically upgraded to the correct tier.

I hope that clears things up a bit more.  Let me know if you have any other questions, anytime.

Re: Best Buy Reward Certificates

Sam,

Thanks again for the insight!

However, I’m still a little confused. Since I’m currently just a standard rewards member (0 pts.), I would only have a 15 day return period. If my elite status wouldn’t update until 20 or so days after my purchase, my return window would already be closed, correct?

If this is not the case, and my return window would be updated to the 30 day period offered to elite members (after my points post to my account in 20 or so days) and I’m then able to go and add the tv protection plan, before the 30th day, that would be awesome. Please advise if this is the case?

Also, would I have to physically bring the tv into the store to add the protection plan or could this be done by just purchasing the plan in store while the tv remains at my home?

Lastly, if I purchase the 2 year protection plan, can I upgrade my plan to the 5 year plan at a later date; say closer to the end of my 2 year plan?

I completely understand I’m asking a ton of questions and truly appreciate your support! Thanks again! - Josh

Re: Best Buy Reward Certificates

Hello, Josh,

Sam is out of the office today, so I am joining the party. Smiley Happy The return/exchange period you are eligible for is determined by your My Best Buy™ status at the time of the request.  While it may take up to 20 days for your status to be upgraded to Elite if you spend the required $1,500, the purchase could very well still be eligible for the extended 30 day return/exchange period once you have officially been upgraded.  And you shouldn't need to haul the TV back into the store to purchase a Geek Squad Protection (GSP) plan.

As far as plan length, I would encourage you to choose the longest plan available now because you wouldn't be able to change it down the road.  If you have any other questions about the rewards program or your individual rewards account, then please feel free to send me a private message and I will see what I can do to further assist.  A private message can be sent by first logging into the forum and then clicking on the blue button in my signature that just so happens to be labeled "Private Message."

Best Wishes,
