Price of protection plan on the day of its purchase or on the day of purchase of the item?

Today (May 30, 2021) I went to my local Best Buy to purchase a 5-year standard Geek Protection Plan for a washer I purchased 6 weeks ago.  According to the website, the cost of this protection plan is $134.99.  However, I was charged $159.99, with the associate's argument being that I bought the washer for $849.99, whereas its price today is $699.99, and this created the difference in the cost of the protection plan.  The question is whether it was correct to be charged not today's price of the protection plan, but its price on the day of the purchase of the item to be covered by this protection plan.

Re: Price of protection plan on the day of its purchase or on the day of purchase of the item?

Hey, CLSQ,

Thank you for reaching back out to us!

A Geek Squad Protection Plan is an awesome way to protect your new products, and it's great to be able to purchase the plan later than at the exact time of purchase for a variety of reasons. It does sound like the store employee advised you correctly, as the plan amount will change with the amount of the purchased item. You can see your current washer here, and what the price of the protection plan would be for that amount. Here you can see a washer similar to the price you paid for your washer, and what the protection plan price is listed as. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
