I recently purchased an item as an open-box item and found two days later that I could purchase that same item new from Best Buy cheaper. I brought the item back to the store still in the package that I picked up the item in (receipt still around the item) and went to return the item. The customer service employee processed the return, but it would only be able to be returned to store credit even though I paid with my credit card. I would assume that three days is still within a window that I should be able to get a refund credited back to my original form of payment.
Please advise as to why this was the case. Thank you.

Hey there, smithwickrm,
Welcome back to our Best Buy forum!
Open-box items are a great way to save some money, but I can understand wanting to do an exchange if there's a promo to get the same product cheaper brand new. That's a deal I'd want to take advantage of too!
That said, I can understand your confusion that they refunded the difference as store credit rather than back on to the form of payment. Since you were still within the Return & Exchange Promise, and had the receipt available, I'm confused as to why you received store credit as well. Did the store provide any reasoning for that while you were there?

I appreciate you providing me with those details. I'd be happy to work with the store on your behalf to determine why you were given store credit instead of a refund. Can you send over your full name, phone number, email address, and the store you went to for the return via a Private Message? You can get that sent my way by clicking on the blue "Private Message" button on the lower right-hand corner of my signature.
Looking forward to working on this further,

As an update for anyone reading this thread, it looks like the store processed my return incorrectly and did the return as a gift return thus only allowing for the return to be processed as a store credit return. I would've thought a gift return would have put the money back onto a gift card and not store credit, but that is the information that was provided to me.

Welcome back, smithwickrm,
While it looks like you’ve already used the store credit you were provided, for future reference, there’s no difference between store credit and a gift card, other than the font on the front of the card. No expiration, and can be used in-store or online, our store credit and gift cards share the same properties.
I see you’ve sent me a private message regarding what you’ve spent the store credit on, which I’ll be replying to shortly. To read my message, you’ll need to be logged into your Support Forum account, and click on the orange envelope in the upper right-hand corner of your screen.

To give an update on the situation, Best Buy has since refunded my store credit and told me that the store that completed my return would reach out to me to process the refund to my credit card. Unfortuately that has been 4 days already and I don't see any progress being made on that. So at the current moment, my transaction looks like this:
-Bought item with credit
-Returned item, refund to store credit
-Store credit voided
So I guessed I've gifted Best Buy with some money? Since I don't have the money back and my store credit was voided, I have nothing to show for my transaction now. I'm awaiting to hear something more on the situation from the person(s) assisting in the matter.

Welcome back, smithwickrm,
Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve this issue. As I mentioned in my message to you last week, your local Best Buy store will be working with you to resolve this matter. I see the store credit they’ve provided was voided early this morning, so I expect you’ll receive contact from them soon, likely after the store has opened. I’ve also reached out to them to request an update as to when they’ll be contacting you, but feel free to visit our Support Forums again if you’ve not received a response by the end of the store’s business today.
