Was the receipt used to verify the card's balance? As gift cards/store credits are treated like cash, they can only replace up to the balance remaining. If someone found and used the balance, it would be ineligible for replacement.

Typically that is how it works if you do not have the card number its gone. As discussed by another forum member it is treated like cash. This is done to protect the security of the card.
