Re: Geek Squad Scam or What

Yes, it's a scam.  None of this aligns with our processes around renewing services.  It also has numerous spelling errors and the address/phone at the bottom are written out like someone not from the USA.

I am a Best Buy Employee, but the views that I post are my own and not that of Best Buy.

Re: Geek Squad Scam or What

Scammers use a similar telephone scam too regarding an amount charged to your card, a huge scam!

Re: Geek Squad Scam or What

Hi there, AkNova,

Thank you for reaching out to us on the Forums! I know it can be concerning when you're not sure if an email is verified or not. It looks like this email is not related to Best Buy, and I recommend you do not engage with this email, click any links on it, or give out any personal information and please be cautious going forward. I would recommend contacting your local authorities if any money has changed hands between you and an individual via this email.

Scammers can fake caller ID, name tags, receipts, and email address information which can trick people into thinking that they are legitimate. If you are ever asked for personal information or feel unsure about a call or email, you would want to contact the business yourself to make sure that it was legitimate, just as you've done here! If something ever seems weird in a call or email, or you are being asked to pay in a different currency, please contact the business directly. You can find out more here:https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/2016/05/scammers-can-fake-caller-id-info.

We also have some pointers available on our forums that may help you to protect yourself in the future: http://forums.bestbuy.com/t5/Geek-Squad-Intelligence/Phone-Scams-and-Computer-Repair-Know-Your-Facts....

Best,

Account Security - breach of my account information - phisher posing as Geek Squad

The purpose of this message is to point out a breach in Best Buy/Geek Squad/Webroot account secutiy. Someone obtained enough of my account information to send a phishing email. How did they get my information from Best Buy/Geek Squad/Webroot? Webroot is supposed to provide security yet my account information is not secure! Also, I find out that Best Buy has no department or mechanism to deal with this illegal activity; not even a way to report it to the company. It's very concerning to have my information in the hands of a company that doesn't seem to have my security as a priority.

Re: Definitely a Scam!!!

[ Edited ]

I had the same issue - see below. I called and was told I need to be in front of my computer and he would have me fill out a form. I don’t even know what computer or what service he is talking about. He said it was from 2016. He hung up on me when I told him to send me an email from Best Buy. The email I received did not come from a Best Buy email. It was this email- {removed per forum guidelines}

Geek Squad Scam!!! 2021

[ Edited ]

Hi I was called first from {removed per forum guidelines}(Arizona) by someone saying they were Geek Squad and that I had a subscription I had to cancel or I was going to be charged 499 to my CC and they knew this from my IP address and there are hackers in my computer [I'm trying not to laugh while writing this but I also am sick because I know some may fall for this] I knew it was a scam but wanted all the info he would give me to pass to you guys. He was directing me then to go to {removed per forum guidelines}<< spaced so no link. I then hung up on him. At which time he hopped in his teleporter and called me one minute later from {removed per forum guidelines}(Indiana - 1 min later) Just wanted you and others to be aware of this. Thank you.

Geek Squad Fraud

[ Edited ]

Hi,

I received the below text today:

"Geek Squad Hi, Billed to Respected Customer. Thanks for choosing Norton ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE PROTECTION PLAN FOR 2 YEAR Invoice #5671283 Amount $799.99 (THIS WILL BE DEBITED AUTOMATICALLY FROM YOUR RESPECTIVE BANK ACCOUNT). For Any Assistance with your Order Call us {removed per forum guidelines}

Seems suspicious to me as I did not sign up for anti virus protection. I have seen no suspiscious activity on my bank or best buy account as of yet.
