Credit Card Application denied

I have been a long time customer of Best Buy and just purchased a laptop a few weeks ago.  Needed to purchase a Macbook Pro.  Went today to buy and applied for credit card and was denied.  You have lost a long term customer.  It was ridiculous.  Someone with no credit card balances, a credit score at 800, and a significant salary.  I would like to know who would qualify if I didn't.  I have no idea how this could possibly happen.  For whatever reason I will not shop at Best Buy again and you lost a $2500 sale.  I am going to MicroCenter tomorrow and purchasing the Macbook Pro there. I would like to add that I used your chat function when I got home and it was not helpful.  I also sent an email through the press email and as I expected got no response.  I do not expect any response from this forum.  I run two businesses and along with my decision to stop shopping at Best Buy, I will be spreading the word to everyone I know.

Re: Credit Card Application denied

Bestbuy doesnt have the ability to assist you with this as CitiBank is the sole owner of the credit cards. Calling Citibank directly should provide you with the answers you seek.

Re: Credit Card Application denied

I understand that.  But because you are using Citi and they screwed up I will no longer be a customer.  When I have similar issues with my business I make an effort to find out what happened.  Because Best Buy isn't interested I will go somewhere else.

Re: Credit Card Application denied

It’s not that Best Buy isn’t interested, Best Buy is not Citibank and doesn’t have access to any of the information required nor access to your Credit check details performed through Citibank so they can not assist with those concerns.

My experience: credit score is only one piece of a much bigger puzzle. Excessive credit checks during a short amount of time and/or high credit utilization may only slightly affect a credit score but shows up as a red flag to a creditor attempting to extend a new line of credit to you.

Re: Credit Card Application denied

My last response.  None of those examples occurred in my case.  I disagree with you.  If Best Buy was interested in my business they would have looked into this.  I have spent thousands of dollars at Best Buy.  For your information Citi made a mistake, one that I can't imagine.  I would have made an attempt to look into what might have happened.  Of course, companies today are too busy to take the time.  I am glad that I still run my business differently.  Since you don't know my details you are in the same boat.  Mistakes happen and a long time customer expects some consideration.  We obviously disagree.

Re: Credit Card Application denied

I’m an employee, we can’t see your account. In fact, as a cardholder when I visit the store and enter my details the most Best Buy employees can see is credit limit and credit available. If a card is not approved, we see nothing and have to refer you to Citibank. You’re right, I don’t know all of your details but none of that will change anything with regards to what Best Buy employees can do. The only ones that can help, look into he reasons for your denial, or validate your details were entered correctly during the application process is Citibank. Even during the application process those details are sent electronically straight to Citibank. Best Buy does not dictate the creditworthiness of applicants, as the lender that would fall on Citibank. They are lending the money and therefore are assuming the risk.

Hope this clears up the confusion as to why Best Buy (retailer) is not a part of the lending process owned by Citibank (bank). Again, it’s not that Best Buy isn’t interested in what’s going on with your account it’s that we cannot assist. Due to data privacy, especially surrounding credit accounts, these are not details we would be provided by Citibank even if we asked nicely.

Re: Credit Card Application denied

Welcome to our community, docape.

I can certainly understand your frustration at having your credit application declined. I would share it were I in similar circumstances.

The long and short of it is that our friend jdogg836 is spot on in his replies to you. Whether a credit card application is accepted or declined is the sole purview of Citibank N.A. If you haven't already reached out to them, you may do so by calling (888) 574-1301. They are best positioned to address your concerns regarding your credit application.

I am disappointed to hear that these circumstances may influence your choice of Best Buy as a future shopping destination. It is my hope you will give us a new opportunity to renew your faith in us one day soon.

Please know I am grateful you took the time to share your experience with us.

Re: Credit Card Application denied

Just to give you feedback your vendor, Citi, rejected my application becuase I had Lifelock and Citi didn't give me time to respond to the email I received telling LifeLock that this wa a legitimate application.  As I tried to explain to you and the other employee, it was this mistake by Citi that cost you the sale and my future business.  This is clearly a screw up by Citi that Best Buy should not be happy with because I am sure I am not the only customer that has had this happen.  This was why I tried to explain to both of you the importance of listening to customers and understanding the issues.  I would like to add that I bought another laptop from Best Buy about a month ago that is now malfunctioning and will not boot up.  This is only getting worse.
