I was accepted for a best buy gold card on May 9th. Wasn't thrilled with the annual fee, so I initially declined. I was told I had 30 days to change my mind, and today I decided to call support and accept the offer. After going through verification again, at the very end I was told I can't be accepted because they can't verify me using my phone number. I was told my only options for verification were to a) have another florida registered phone number, or b) have an existing citibank credit card.
This seems absurd, first because I had already been accepted and given an offer prior, and second because there has to be other methods of verification besides having another phone line or having a city card. I don't think its uncommon to only have a cell phone these days, having a landline is not expected. I also don't think it should be expected that I have another city card. I'm relatively young, I don't have many credit cards. Even weirder, when I asked why I was denied when I had already been accepted previously, she said "Well I see a note here saying that you were verified through your cell phone. Thats wrong, they shouldn't have accepted you. Its confusing to explain."
The verification process is not manual, my information was put into a system and a result was spat out. The second time, the result was changed for some reason.
If my name, address, DOB, social security number, and phone number isn't enough to verify my identity, then what else can I possibly supply? I'm happy to work with Citbank and Bestbuy to come up with a solution here, I have an alternative work email address which can be linked back to my employer, and verified through the information they have. I'm open to any other possiblities as well.
