Best Buy Gift Card Information Stolen Over the Phone

I was selling my Best Buy gift card online. A thief pretended to be a buyer and requested to verify the balance with the Best Buy number on the back of the card using a three way phone call.

I did what he said. After the phone call, my card information was stolen and the card balance was used up at the Best Buy store #142 in Milpitas, CA while I and my card were in Milwaukee, WI.

I didn't tell him the card number. I just entered the card number on my phone on the phone call to the number on the back of the card.

I don't know how he could use my card balance without having my physical card. I know the address of the store where the thief made the purchase and what he purchased.

I believe the cameras at that store caught his image. I have already tried to file a police report but Best Buy store arenot coorbirating with them, they want a search warrent in order to let them do their investigation! To do this, I have to pay more that what theift stole!

Is there anything can be done?

Thank you very much!

Re: Best Buy Gift Card Information Stolen Over the Phone

Hey MOBBAK,

Thanks for visiting the forums and taking the time to post! I regret to hear about this experience you had in attempting to sell a gift card.

In this situation, I would refer you to the Best Buy Gift Card Terms and Conditions as well as advise you that gift cards are treated similarly to cash when it comes to loss or theft. We would recommend continuing to work with police and follow any advice they can provide.

Regards,

Re: Best Buy Gift Card Information Stolen Over the Phone

I understand, but what should I do if the Best Buy store aren't cooperate with the Police Department? They keep asking for search warrant which will cost me more than what was in the Gift Card (Flight, lawyer, court, hotel, rental car, etc)

Hi MOBBAK,

I understand you’ve found yourself in a difficult situation and it’s surely frustrating. I would, however, again advise continuing to work with law enforcement regarding this situation as they would be in the best position to guide you through the investigation process.

Sincerely,

Re: Best Buy Gift Card Information Stolen Over the Phone

Hi there,

Thank you for your response.

Were you able to get your money back completely? If yes how? Please. I really need to solve this issue and get my money back

I have tried multiple times with the BestBuy Customer care to work out and cooperate with the Police Department from the same city, But it didn't worked out. And the investigator told me that they can't do anything if they don't have the work order from the court or if the store don't want to work out with them. So, it seems to me there is no solution for me, and I gave up unless if you had different approach to solve the issue?

Thanks again for your time

Re: Best Buy Gift Card Information Stolen Over the Phone

Please don’t give out your gift card numbers, you wouldn’t give a random person your bank account and routing numbers, or your full credit card/expiration/CID. This is no different because at a basic level, this is no different than a credit card. We live in a day and age where anyone can create a gift card that looks/works just like the real deal in a matter of seconds. The only thing that slows the criminals who do this down is that they don’t know a valid card number with a balance to steal. When you give that information out to them, they are able to take your balance.

You have to understand, when these guys come in with the gift card they took from you Best Buy cannot tell that it is fake. Once made aware, Best Buy does cooperate with law enforcement in these investigations. Oftentimes there is not much to provide, these criminals leave as little paper trail as they can.

I’m sorry this happened to you, and I would recommend checking out the Federal Trade Commissions page on scams. There are literally thousands of them, and a great portion of them rely on convincing people to give out information they shouldn’t ever provide to a stranger. That reading has helped me become more cognizant of the dangers out there.
I am a Best Buy Employee, but the views that I post are my own and not that of Best Buy.

Re: Best Buy Gift Card Information Stolen Over the Phone

I didn't even try to give it to him, the guy just asked me to have conference call with Best Buy Gift card to verify the balance of the card, so I did that and I entered the number from the keypad from my side, and he was able to get the numbers from the tone which is what I wasn't expect.

What I just want from BestBuy is just to share the video of the guy when he was trying to pay at the cashier, so they can identify the person face. That's all. so they can proceed.

Thanks anyway for your response.

No
The police is involved now
I don’t think you ever gone see the money back?
How are and from where?
Best Buy they find excuses
But if they where gone verify that the buyer actually has the gifts cards before releasing the items

Re: Best Buy Gift Card Information Stolen Over the Phone

Umm, I will contact them and see if they have any new update about my case, maybe too many people complained about same guy, that is why they are forcing BestBuy to cooperate

"I don't think you ever gone see the money back?" I didn't understand this part, are you saying that it's not possible to get my money back? or what? I am little confused here

anyway, could you please explain on what you have done and how the police got involved to helping you?
