Best Buy Email Scam

I received very official looking email from "BestBuyInfo@emailinfo.bestbuy.com" complete with Geek Squad graphics and my full purchase information. By calling the attached 800 number, I was on various phone conversations and the perpetrators got and confirmed my credit card info. After a dead end I called my local store for info, and miraculously, Geek Squad answered (it was closing time) and led me to believe I'd been scammed.  I immediately cancelled my CitiBank Visa. Many thanks to the Squad, for answering the phone and immediately seeing that something was VERY wrong.

I hope that Best Buy does the right thing and makes their info system unavailable to external criminals.

Re: Best Buy Email Scam

This doesn't look like a scam from the details provided.  The phone number listed in your email IS Geek Squad.  I'd have to know a lot more before I could tell you exactly what you were seeing.  You can see that phone number on the Geek Squad Services page listed here,

If you called some other phone number instead of the one you listed, disregard the above information.  Hopefully a moderator can join in soon and clear up the confusion for you.

Re: Best Buy Email Scam

Hello, maryecollin,

Thanks for reaching out to us about the email that you received. I understand it can be tough to tell if an email is legitimate or not, and as someone who has had accounts compromised previously, I know it's important to be cautious with stuff like this.

As jdogg836 mentioned, based on the information that you shared, it does appear that this email was likely sent from us, but whether it was regarding a plan that was actually in your name or not, I can't tell from just what you shared. If you'd like for me to research this further with you, feel free to send me a private message with your first and last name, phone number, and email address. Also, if you could copy the entire email that you received into the message, that'd be helpful. To send the private message, you can use the button in my signature below.

Sincerely,

Re: Best Buy Email Scam

I appreciate your reply. The phone # IS for the Geek Squad....however, I assure you it did NOT go to the Geek Squad. I have called that number before and the rep was professional and courteous, not at all like the encounter I had for an hour with an off-shore incomprehenisible 'person' in a boiler-room w/ raucous, bawdy background. She told me to ignore multiple ads telling me that I was being signed up for this, and then that, offer, but that I could cancel these. She then gave me another 800 # to call so a bot could "verify" my full identifiying information and full credit card info. This was another dead end. Somehow these perpetrators have intercepted/hacked into some Best Buy system. [Is BestBuyInfo@emailinfo.bestbuy.com a real bonafide mailing address? If so, my local Geek did not recognize it, nor did he recognize that the 800 # was really for the Squad.] I was really in a panic at that point and immediately cancelled the Citi card.

Re: Best Buy Email Scam

Go ahead and send that private message to Melissa-BBY, she can look into things and cover details that would contain your private information.

That email address, phone number, and the formatting do seem to align with the real thing.  Melissa works from corporate and can peek behind the scenes at the inner workings to answer the rest of your questions.

Re: Best Buy Email Scam

Hello again, maryecollin,

Yes, that email address is the standard email address we use for our marketing and business related emails to customers. I don't know why our Geek Squad Agents didn't know that, but they are incorrect if they said the email or phone number was not ours. The phone number alone spells out (800) GEEK-SQUAD minus the D on the end.

From what you showed in your message, it appears that some sort of plan was cancelled that was in your name, but I cannot verify more than that without you sending me your information via private message.

Sincerely,

Re: Best Buy Email Scam

FYI - I HAVE tried to respond via private message and get this alert: "You have reached the limit for number of private messages that you can send for now. Please try again later."

Re: Best Buy Email Scam

Thanks for letting me know of the error. At the top of the boards there is a floated post called Having an issue sending us a Private Message as requested? In this post, there are steps that can be taken to help fix this issue. If you continue to experience that error after following the steps, please let me know and I can explore other options to continue discussing this with you.

Re: Best Buy Email Scam

The word "test" went thru after I cleared cache/cookies but the next message, with a copy of the email I received, did not.
