May the 4th Be With You

I am acquainted with people who have never seen a Star Wars movie. Mystifying, I know, but it’s true. But so great has one film’s influence been on our culture, it has inspired something of a movement, certainly a philosophy, not to mention six more films (and more to come), two animated TV series, and shockingly large body of art and literature. Even those people who have not experienced the wonder of that long ago and far, far away galaxy, who have not choked on the dust of Tatooine or inhaled the foul stench of the swamps of Dagobah (or of Governor Tarkin for that matter) live in a world that has been influenced by those distant and long ago worlds. You don’t have to know the nuances of the Jedi to know of the Force. It has pervaded our culture in a very real way for a fictional invention. And while you might think I’m a nerd when I fondly bid you bon voyage with “May the Force be with you,” you also know that I’m wishing you well, that I hope you are protected by the benevolent embrace of this all important and omnipresent – well, force.

Just as the Force is a constant in the Star Wars universe, Star Wars is a constant in ours. So much so that goofy word play can influence national retailers to play along with the gag.

Which brings us to May the 4th. It's Star Wars Day! And it's not just another greeting card holiday either!
