Hello again all my fellow music and movie fanatics! I apologize for not getting my picks up for last week, but I trust everyone was able to find something they wanted with all of the great releases. March 12th is a pretty exciting day for new releases, and here is what I'm most excited about...
Music
David Bowie is back with his first release in ten years and his 24th album, The Next Day. He unexpectedly announced the existence of this album only two short months ago, and has since released two singles, “Where Are We Now?” and “The Stars (Are Out Tonight),” to tide everyone over. I know I couldn’t believe it when I first heard he would be releasing a new album, and I am extremely excited to finally get to hear it! It will also be available in a Deluxe Edition.
My Bloody Valentine’s third album, mbv, and first release in 22 years will also be made available on 3/12. This album was released by the band themselves last month, but it is finally going to be available on a wider scale, including on BestBuy.com. This Irish band had a very large impact in creating the “shoegaze” subgenre, and released what is now their iconic album, Loveless, in 1991. They have been relatively quiet ever since then, so I know any fan of theirs was shocked when this album was announced.
Biffy Clyro will be releasing their sixth album, Opposites. This Scottish rock band has actually been around for quite a while, but I didn’t first hear about them until they released their fourth album, Puzzle. This was followed up by Only Revolutions, which had many great songs like “The Captain,” “The Golden Rule,” and “Mountains.” Those two albums together got me hooked! For this new release, they put out the single “Black Chandelier” a while ago which has helped to keep my interest peaked until this release is finally out.

This Must Be the Place stars Sean Penn, Frances McDormand, and Judd Hirsch. It follows the story of Cheyenne (Penn) who is a former rock star living in Ireland that journeys back to New York to be with his father during his final hours. Cheyenne learns the real and troubling details of his father’s life during World War II, and sets off on a journey to find those responsible. This film will be available on Blu-ray and DVD, and you can view the trailer here. This film is rated R.
Smashed is a story of a married couple who both have a drinking problem, and their marriage is put to the test when one of them decides to get sober.
