Matt's Picks: April 9th Releases

[ Edited ]

A new week means a fresh new list of exciting new releases! This week has some releases that I’ve been waiting on for quite a while now, so I know my ears are certainly going to be busy until next Tuesday.  April seems like it’s going to be a big music month since I’m already excited about a bunch of releases for next week too, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Here is what I’m looking forward to on April 9th…

Music

James Blake will be releasing his second full-length album, Overgrown. This English electronic musician and producer got a lot of attention with his self-titled debut two years, including my attention. This is when I first heard him with his song “The Wilhelm Scream,” and got completely drawn in to the rest of the album. I hear some similarities to Bon Iver when I listen to James Blake, which might be part of what I enjoy. If you’re unfamiliar with his music, I highly recommend you check out what we have available for listening off his debut album from the link above to BestBuy.com, or check out the new single, “Retrograde.” This album will also be available on vinyl.

Kurt Vile will be releasing his fifth album, Wakin on a Pretty Daze. After getting his start in the band The War on Drugs, he began to focus on his solo career. It wasn’t really until his fourth solo album, Smoke Ring for My Halo, that he began receiving more notice, which is also when I first came across his music. This indie rocker has a bit of a folk sound to a lot of his songs, and I’m really looking forward to this new album. Feel free to check out the rest of his albums on BestBuy.com and check out the first single from the new album that also happens to be the title track. This album will also be available on vinyl.

Dawes will be releasing their third album, Stories Don’t End. This rock band with a bit of an Americana sound has been around for a couple years now, and while I’ve heard some of their songs from previous albums, I haven’t yet taken the time to sit and listen to one in its entirety. I think I need to change that with this album after just hearing some samples of the songs. You can check out samples from songs on their albums by visiting BestBuy.com to take a listen for yourself. This album will also be available on vinyl.

The Postal Service will be releasing a 10th Anniversary Edition of their debut album, Give Up. This release will include all of the songs from the original album, as well as 15 additional tracks with two new songs. Started by Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard, Jimmy Tamborello (also known as Dntel), and Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley, they only released the one album since they ended up getting so busy with their other bands. This release will give The Postal Service fans a chance to finally hear some brand new songs, as well as a handful of rarities and remixed songs. This release will also be available on vinyl.

Movies

Hyde Park on Hudson, starring Bill Murray and Laura Linney, will also be released this week. In this film, Murray plays Franklin D. Roosevelt and Linney plays Margaret Suckley. It takes place during the weekend in 1939 when President Roosevelt hosted the King and Queen of England at his estate. While the film itself has received mixed reviews, Bill Murray has been receiving a lot of praise for his portrayal of FDR. This film will be released on DVD and Blu-ray, and is rated R. You can view the trailer here.

What is everybody else looking forward to? Did anyone pick up any other great new releases recently?

Re: Matt's Picks: April 9th Releases

Matt, you left out the two best music releases for this week! The new Stone Sour and Drowning Pool albums are pretty awesome.

Both have a good mix of hard rock and alternative.  Definitely recommend the song "Bleed With Me" off of the Resilience album as it's become a personal favorite.  Never really kept up with them after their original album with "Bodies", but I'm going to have to go back and listen to the rest of their music if they've kept up this sound for so many years.

And yeah...movie releases were really light this week.  Nothing good for me.  "A Certain Scientific Railgun" (anime) releases next Tuesday, though.  Will pick that one up.

Wait - it's been 10 years since "Give Up" came out? Now I feel really old.
