Week 4
Welcome to Week 4 of Horror Movie of the Week! This week is literally the most profitable horror movie ever made: Paranormal Activity. You might be wondering, “How was that the most profitable? Certainly, it was good, but it wasn’t that good, was it?” The answer is quite simple. Bringing back the love of found footage horror popularized by The Blair Witch Project, this film had a budget of less than $15K. So, while it may not have had the highest box office sales in comparison to other hits, it had the biggest margin.
This found footage film follows Katie, and her film enthusiast significant other, Micah, as they begin to experience paranormal phenomenon in their home. Despite Katie’s protests, Micah insists on documenting the experiences which only escalates and aggravates the entity in their home. Between amazing jump scares and chilling moments, this movie keeps you on the edge of your seat!
There aren’t many horror films that genuinely leave me unsettled, but I remember upon release that this one definitely had me sleeping with the lights on. While I can’t say I’ve kept up with the several sequels that it sparked, I recall Paranormal Activity 2 living up to the original, and the ones I haven’t seen are definitely on my list.
If you want a movie to leave you with a higher heart rate from the jump scares and a bit (ok, very) creeped out, I would absolutely recommend giving these a watch!
