Gaming on Battery

Which laptop is the best for gaming on the go ?

I am looking for a laptop with dGfx that will not only last longer while I play games but also have the same performance on battery as I can get on AC.  I notice with my old laptop that when I unplugged from the wall by overall performance was hurt.

Re: Gaming on Battery

I have a high end gaming laptop.  If I try to run it on the battery while gaming my battery time is less than 45 minutes.

Most laptops when you unpug the cord will automatically switch to a power saving mode.  I switched my power features to not degrade the laptop when unplugged and I am running it down significantly faster.

But gaming takes a lot more power then using emial or browsing the web. When I unplug it while online or doing simply computer stuff I can get 90 to 120 minutes.

Sadlly I don't think you will be able to find a laptop that will run at max gaming  performance unplugged and last a long time unless it has a VERY large batter.

Re: Gaming on Battery

Hi there, Paul_Review,

To be perfectly honest, our super user, bobberuchi, nailed it right on the head! There are quite a few gaming laptops out there that have excellent battery life, but more often than not, they'll go straight to a power-saving mode when unplugged to ensure you're able to play for as long as possible. If you're looking for a full-powered experience, this may mean you're left with less time to play while being disconnected.

That said, I have heard good things about the MSI GS65 Stealth laptop. It definitely is on the pricier side, but the battery life may last longer for you.

I hope this helps,

Re: Gaming on Battery

Can you quanify what will happen to game playablity when on Battery ?

Doesn't at least one of the Windows 10 battery slider positions ofer the same level of performance albeit, with the battery life trade-off or is the PC forced to trade performance for battery life ?

Thanks

Re: Gaming on Battery

Hey Paul_Review,

I can't say for certain what happens when you unplug the computer; however, I'd say it's safe bet it will automatically adjust itself to a battery-saving mode. You can switch it to full power though and use it from there.

That said, I haven't heard of any gaming computer that's specifically solved the battery life issue. I'd sit tight though. Others in this community may have suggestions for you that might help! Smiley Happy

Re: Gaming on Battery

On my gaming laptop when I unplug the cord the screen automatically goes dim.

In the background it them throttles back all your active apps

Your laptop will enter sleep mode in short order.  I think it changes it to 5 minutes of no activity or less.

After you posted this question I tested it on my machine. I am playing Tomb Raider. My computer lasted about 25 minutes on the battery.

Re: Gaming on Battery

Yes you can select the options for how you want it to behave when the cord is unplugged.

the factory default is to go into power saving mode.

I tried it again last night.  I was just in these forums and messaging in Facebook. My computer lasted about 55 minutes.

However, I do have a robust gaming laptop and by its nature will use a lot more power than one that is not designed for gaming.

My old Dell Laptop with integrated grapics, I could work on my spreadsheets and in MS Access for a good 90 minutes.
