I contacted Insignia product support and their response was "As the updates to the Google assistant devices are done by Google my best advice would be to get in touch with them about this situation".
I believe the Google Max speaker does have the ability to pair, but I'm not sure since these are the only Google speakers that I own.
I had a similar problem with my Nexus 7 2013 tablet. A Google software update toasted the memory but it was made by Asus. Neither one wanted to own up to the problem and honor the warranty.
