With no disrespect to you Gonza, I disagree with your reasoning. Yes, blu-ray is fairly new (a couple of years) and the standards are changing, but that is exactly what firmware updates are for. The newer players boast better specs and features like bd live and youtube and all that, but the majority of consumers just want a player that will play discs. I find it impossible to believe that the discs being created can not be played on the hardware that we already have. If the PS3, a device that came out years ago, can stay current and play every disc with an occasional firmware update, then there is no reason why any other player can not do the same. The issue here is not the hardware, it is the software, and software can be upgraded.
If the manufacturers want to be chumps, then just charge us 10 bucks per firmware update. That is much cheaper than making everyone buy a new player every time they feel like dropping an old one. I for one purchased the 4 year replacement warranty from BestBuy. If the player becomes unusable, I'll take it back and grab a new one. But there is no way I'm going to pay for another blu-ray player. Two in one year has been enough for me.

The part of this whole fiasco that angers me is Insignia and Best Buy finally told me a firmware upgrade would take care of this issue. The only downfall, this is discontinued and they won't develop firmware for this player anymore. To add to the whole mess, when Insignia/Best Buy started troubleshooting this for me, the player was under warranty. Once Insignia finally decided they weren't developing for this player anymore, they told me to take it back to Best Buy for a newer model since it was under warranty. Because Best Buy/Insignia both took so long, by the time they had a resolution, the warranty had expired three days earlier. So it expired while they were trying to figure out what to do for me. That means, I don't get anything except a player that won't play certain movies. Missed it by three days while these folks were trying to sort it out. Rest assured, Insignia won't be a brand that ever consider purchasing. Since they were working on a problem while this was under warranty, I thought they would honor the warranty since they were in possession of the player when the warranty lapsed. Guess not.
that's just wrong....keep going up the BB chain until you get resolution...your complaint was while the player was still under warranty. Would you put up with that if it was your car that was having engine problems a month before the warranty expired and you told the dealer about it, but they screwed around with you for 45 days and said "it's not under warranty any more - too bad"?

Hello tkosma and all,
After consulting with our engineering team, I have received the following update:
Currently there is no additional firmware needed for this model (NS-BRDVD). As the industry continues to evolve we will monitor the needs of our customers across our product lines and publish firmware if needed or required.
Please continue to let us know if you have concerns about our products.
Regards,
John

John,
Thank you for checking into the problem. I appreciate it. Do you have any sugegstions as to how to deal with a BR disc that won't load anything other than the main menu? This is the problem I (and some others) have experienced with Inglorious Basterds.
Thanks
Craig

Insignia,
Any suggestions for us as to how to play un-playable BD?
Thank you.

Hello. I have the NS-BRDVD player and have had no problems playing most discs till now. I updated the firmware weeks ago. I purchased the new "9" bluray disc from bestbuy yesterday and have found that it will only play the menu, FBI warning and then loads indefinitely without playing. I tried choosing a scene in the movie and playing from that point but it only repeats the menu screen scene over and over. When playing the disc in a PS3 it plays the movie with no problem.
IF it's true that Insignia/Best Buy will not update their frimware, THEN I sense a lawsuit forthcoming AND the loss of many lifetime customers in the process. If Best Buy/Insignia does not rectify the situation that I and other customers are experiencing, they are providing nothing more than a product that doesn't do what it is sold to do.
The whole function of a bluray player is to play blurays. If I'm being sold a bluray disc player (whose primary function is to play all bluray discs) that will only play SOME blurays, I should be told beforehand.
