Exchange and taking advantage of an old dude

Best Buy,

So my grandfather gave us Christmas presents last night. He was so excited he couldn’t wait. Sadly his cancer is back and he’s declined the chemo for it this time around. (Long story - Still trying to convince him but he’s misses our grandmother...)

Anyways, he shocked me with a Surface Pro. It’s an amazing gift and gesture! However, they sold him last years model. He said he went to the store and said give me the newest and best one. He says newest and best all the time. He jokes with the workers money doesn’t matter as he will be dead soon (morbid I know but he finds it funny.) The sales associate I wanted to take advantage and sell through last years stock and gave him the pro 2017. Not cool Best Buy! Just because he’s old doesn’t mean you should mislead customers like this.

He pays cash for everything, as he’s old school. I will NOT ask him for a receipt as this would upset him and think he messed up.

Best Buy, all I want is to exchange it for the new Surface 6. It’s opened as he wanted to see what the heck it did.

Considering the situation, would I be able to go to my local Best Buy and exchange it for the Surface 6 without a receipt?

At the discretion of a manager, perhaps they could do a no receipt return but you would get the lowest sale price for the item from the last six months onto a store credit.

Re: Exchange and taking advantage of an old dude

So the manager could reject me return? The serial number would match up - he got it at bestbuy 100%.
And how do I find the lowest sale price? As long as it’s not insanely low I’m fine with it.

And It’s just what the heck Best Buy? Why take advantage of an old guy to sell your old inventory? My sister is a premium bestbuy member and she is beyond upset over this.

It may not seem like a lot of money to some, but for me it’s a ton.

Without a receipt, it is absolutely at the discretion of a manager especially since it was an opened product.

The surface pro 2017 is an awesome machine and you got it as a gift... why not use it?? Also Best Buy doesn't record serial numbers for most transactions.

It definitely is...
But the 6 is out now and the basically same price.
They took advantage of the situation.

Re: Exchange and taking advantage of an old dude

Hello Mickey7,

Welcome to the Best Buy Community forums. I’m very sorry to hear about your grandfather’s health. I apologize about the product being last year’s model as well.

Under our Return & Exchange Promise, we would need a receipt in order to accept a return or perform an exchange on your Surface. My best advice for you would be to ask him for a copy of that receipt “just in case” for the warranty. If any issues pop up with the Surface while it’s under warranty, you’ll need a proof of purchase to get warranty service. This could be a good cover for you to ask for that receipt.

If there’s anything else I can help you out with, please let me know.

Sincerely,

I really can’t believe that response from Best Buy. Its consistent though with their policy on the elderly, keep lying and tricking them. They won’t know.

He will see through that. He just bought it. If I ask for the receipt he will assume something is wrong with it. And I’d rather not lie to my grandfather. I know bestbuy is fine with lying obviously but I’m not.

Re: Exchange and taking advantage of an old dude

Hello again Mickey7,

I’m sure the intent of the sale associate was not to lie, and I would be happy to look into this to see if we have any options to help out.

However, under our Privacy Policy, we would only be able to discuss something like this with the actual purchaser. That means we’d need your grandfather to register an account here with us and reach out. I understand that doing that would defeat the purpose of your inquiry, so I don’t know that you’d want to have him do that.

In any case, to reiterate, we would need a receipt in order to accept a return or exchange on that Surface.

If there’s anything further I can assist you with, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Kyle R|Social Media Specialist | Best Buy® Corporate
