Discrepancy with distance and pace

So I walked half marathon today. Started the outdoor walk workout just as walked over the start line. My watch shows I walked over 15 miles with an average pace of ~13:30, but the course is 13.1 miles, and the bib time shows a pace of 15:28.

So what can cause this big of a discrepancy? I have an AppleWatch 3. I have not done the last 2 updates as I am sick of needing to factory reset and then upgrade and then move everything back. Also due to training and recent life changes my watch band has become somewhat loose. Could the extra movement have added the extra miles?

I guess I’m just looking for advice: Is this something to expect with an old watch? Is there something I can do to get more accurate measure?

Thank you.

Re: Discrepancy with distance and pace

Over that great of a distance differences in stride will cause variations such as this.

I believe in most devices you can enter your length of stride and that is what it uses to calculate distance.

Other devices, such as your iWatch can utilize GPS to calculate distance.

I strongly believe that one of the updates had broken the watch update process as I had to reset my Apple Watch 3. I still have my old Iphone 6s and also another update caused issues with the reporting of the data as well. One reset fixed it on the watch.
