MAKE Television: On the Air

For regular readers of the blog, Make Television is no new thing to you. As the brainchild of Make Magazine, this new program brings DIY (Do It Yourself) projects to the television in a way only MacGyver (or the A-Team!) has done before — but with a twist: it shows you how to build them yourselves, at home, out of everyday ordinary items lying around the house.

Geek Squad founder Robert Stephens has been a champion for the development of this show for over 3 years, and it’s pretty cool to see Geek Squad supporting the development of a show that encourages kids to take things apart, put them back together in unique, new ways, and develop a love for science and technology that can last for a lifetime.

When I was a kid, we only had Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys, and Erector Sets to indulge our fantasy of putting tinkering dreams to reality, so watching bits of Make Television episodes last night made me envious for the new generation of kids. Then I woke up and realized no one was stopping me from building these projects myself.

Hosted by master tinkerer John Park, look for air-powered Burrito Blasters, a kite cam, a personal “black box”, and many more cool DIY projects to be revealed in upcoming episodes. Check them out now atwww.makezine.tv, or look for them coming soon on your local public television station.

Attending the Make Television launch event last night made me realize that, deep inside of all of us lurks a child who wants to play with new toys. Make Television realizes this truth in us all, and caters to awakening that sleeping kid.

Make Television is on the air as of this weekend, so find your local listing at http://makezine.tv/broadcast/, check it out, and tell a kid (of any age) about it — and help them indulge in a new type of play, and develop skill sets that will never go out of style.
