Will I need some sort of montly subscription to access and play head to head games like COD Cold War even if I have already purchased the game?

Depends.

If you just want to play COD: Warzone, PS Plus is not required.

If you want to play COD Cold War MP and/or Zombies, PS Plus is required.

You can also get PlayStation Plus which will give you a temp use of a random free game and access to older games in the library.

I just got my first Playstation last month and I have been usign Plus to play some older games to get better at using the controller.

There is a subscription to play head to head for Xbox as well.
