What's going on with these shipping practices?

[ Edited ]

I posted about Best Buy's lackluster shipping practices for video games a few months ago in this thread. Since then, I've avoiding buying any video games through bestbuy.com.

Considering how hard it's been finding the Metroid Dread Special Edition, I figured I'd take my chances when it finally popped up on the site last week. Since I hadn't been able to find it in stores, I placed my order and figured that it would be shipped better than a standard game, considering it's in a larger box. (I'd ordered an AIO CPU cooler last holiday season from bestbuy.com, and it was packed incredibly well. Maybe this would be packed with the same level of care.)

Not at all. My $90 (+ tax), difficult-to-find, limited-release video game came shipped in a padded mailer. As a result, the box is completely wrecked. I've uploaded some pics {removed per forum guidelines} if you want to see the damage and how this game was packaged.

Needless to say, I'm going to have to return this and -- due to how hard it's been to buy -- try and find it elsewhere, if at all. This all just seems like so much waste over an incredibly preventable problem. Packing items properly for shipment ensures the customer receives their purchase in the same condition it shipped out. I could have been a very happy customer if this were packed in a well-padded box.

Poor packing often results in a damaged item which needs to be returned, wasting a trip to the store or post office, wasting time and money. Nobody wins here, and as someone who buys a LOT of games online, there's absolutely a better way to do this.

I love shopping at Best Buy (I'm an Elite Member and shop there regularly), but it's hard to justify making any further gaming purchases when they keep shipping games to me like this.

Re: What's going on with these shipping practices?

why have you now opted for in store pick up on special edition items?

I switched to that several years ago and have not received a damage steel case since.

Re: What's going on with these shipping practices?

Store pickup wasn't an option when I placed my order. I could only have it shipped. It was impossible for me to select store pickup.

Regardless, I don't think it's too big an ask to have products shipped appropriately in a way that protects against damage while in transit. This wasn't a standalone SteelBook, but a special edition in an oversized collector's box. It should have been packed in a sturdy box with some level of care and consideration.

Re: What's going on with these shipping practices?

Hi, CripplerJones,

Thank you for your feedback about the copy of Metroid Dread Special Edition you received. Having damage during shipping is certainly never ideal, but I understand how this could be particularly frustrating given the collectible nature of the product.

Generally speaking, if an item is received damaged, there can be a couple options for us to help, including return or exchange. It sounds like you have already opted for a return due to availability. While I cannot change what has gone before, I do appreciate the feedback and will be happy to record it here at the Corporate level. To ensure it is as detailed as possible, please send a private message with your full name, phone number, email address, and order number (if available). Beyond this, if you have specific ideas on how Best Buy can improve that you would like to share with Best Buy, you can also post on the IDEAX board here

All the best,
