Subcontractor fraud

I called the toll free number earlier and got nowhere with the person that I talked to so I thought I would try posting here.


I ordered a dishwasher from Best Buy and also got the installation and haul away services which was scheduled for 10/23.  When the guy pulled out the old dishwasher he told me it would cost an extra $160 because the old one was hardwired, and the new one needed an outlet to plug into.  $160 seemed steep but I knew this was a possibility so I was okay with it.  After the installation was complete he showed me how the new one worked and everything was fine.  When it came time to pay he told me to make a check payable to GCS and I did so.


Earlier today I received a call from Chase because they suspected a fraudulent check was cashed at one of their banks.  The lady I spoke to asked if I had written out any checks recently for $160 and to whom, and I told her about the check to GCS from the previous week. While I was on the phone with her I checked my bank account online and looked at the image of the check.  The guy had changed GCS on the payable line to cash!  See the image below.



Needless to say I was pretty shocked by this.  I'm not sure if the guy charged me for unecessary work or if he's ripping off his employer, but since Best Buy uses them as a subcontractor I felt like you should be aware.
