Kitchen Remodeling Dream Turned into a Nightmare

[ Edited ]

Nearly a year ago, Nipa P. and her husband Jaimin S. moved out of their downtown apartment in Chicago and purchased their first home in the lovely Western suburb of Bolingbrook.  Excited about their new abode, Nipa poured her creative energy into designing and remodeling the place, particularly the kitchen, which is the heart of any home.  An orthodontist by profession who works six days a week, time is always a scarce resource for Nipa.  But never to be discouraged easily, she dedicated all of her weekday evenings and weekends to research kitchen trends and designs to ultimately come up with a beautiful design.  The next step was to engage someone to execute her vision.  To that end, Nipa reached out to Best Buy, and spent hours with the company's representative to select and finalize the appliances, which would have to be custom ordered.  The appliances were to be supplied by Kitchen-Aid.  Little did Nipa know that once she placed an order, Kitchen-Aid and Best Buy would string her along and give her endless run-arounds. The order for various appliances was initially placed in December 2021 (for a total amount of nearly $10k plus).  First, Best Buy made the careless mistake in taking the order down for a 27-inch microwave when Nipa had instructed them to provide a 30-inch microwave.  Then, when she visited the store in March 2022, she found out this mistake and pointed it out. So, Best Buy required Nipa to place the order again for the 30-inch microwave and cancel the one for the 27-inch product.  By then, four months were already lost.  Kitchen-Aid/Best Buy promised a delivery and install date of June 2022 for the 30-inch microwave.  Then, they pushed the delivery date out to August on their own, and then again to September of 2022.  Nipa had planned to host her extended family over the summer in her new home.  That experience turned out to be less than pleasant as the family had to spend the summer in a partially done kitchen.  Kitchen-Aid/Best Buy recently informed Nipa that the microwave will “likely” be delivered in January 2023.   What makes the couple’s experience worse is that no one has any idea when the appliances would be delivered.  One year?  Two years?  Five years?  Neither Kitchen-Aid nor Best Buy is ready to commit to a date certain, holding Nipa and Jaimin in a forever limbo.  This entire experience has left the couple beyond discouraged and disappointed. It takes no genius to realize that Kitchen-Aid and Best Buy do not need to treat Nipa’s order with any level of importance.  Why would it?  The company knows that Nipa depends on the custom ordered appliances.  Because the appliances cannot be purchased from any other manufacture but kitchen-aid, the company knows that Nipa has no choice but to wait.  Companies like Kitchen-Aid and Best Buy should be held accountable for taking advantage of customers using such bait-and-switch sales tactics.
