So this is extremely odd and has obviously never happened before. I purchased an HP 951XL yellow ink cartridge from bestbuy.com. I received a new, sealed package as I expected. Upon getting home from work I opened the box and went to install it. I noticed right away it was different than the ones I normally get. It had an extra plastic seal over the ink port and a yellow tape tab covering a hole in the top that I had to remove. I thought nothing of it, assuming it was simply a newer version. After installing it, my printer immediately threw a warning on screen saying it couldn't garuantee non-HP ink. Naturally I was confused. Upon removing the cartridge from the printer I looked closer and realized it was a "Miss Deer" brand cartridge. I have no idea how it got into a SEALED HP package, and I know I can't return it, but I certainly want to bring this to the attention of someone. HP brand ink is $35 plus tax for one color. I can get all 4 cartridges in XL size of the off-brand online for $15. Obviously if that's what I wanted I would have done so, but I hate off-brand ink as it has always caused printing issues for me in the past.
The problem now of course is I don't feel safe buying anymore ink from bestbuy.com and if I ever buy any from the actual store I'll have to open it on the spot to make sure it's legit...

Please keep in mind that Best Buy did not manufacture the ink cartridge nor do they package them.
Your feeling of safety is a little misdirected and should be pointed at HP as they are the group that made it and packaged it.
To that end, however, I strongly suggest contacting HP and letting them know as well as I am sure this is not their normal operating mode.

The ink cartridge Miss Deer uses, upon further inspection, is made completely differently from HP's. The chips are different, the labeling is different, even the plastic is molded differently which suggests it was not made in the same location. While it is entirely possible HP uses the same group to manufacture their product as Miss Deer(would be a great selling point for Miss Deer if true), and this mistake occurred long before Best Buy received it, it's also possible there are multiple suppliers selling HP products that they use to stock their inventory and they happened to use one that's subpar to due to costs. The simple truth is we'll never know how or why this happened. I simply posted it in these forums to alert all to what happened and see if anyone else has ever had this issue. Naturally I intend to discuss this with HP as well. While I appreciate your response, I'll take my own advise on who to distrust and where to do business.

It is entirely possible that the manufacturer of the ink makes ink for a variety of different printer companies, including they make it for HP as well.
Seems a likly culprit woudl be that in the plant where it is made a batch of Miss Deer got put in the HP package.
There are a lot of companies that all get products like ink refills all made by the same manufacturer, and it is just branded different.

Well that is a strong case to avoid HP products in the future.
Horrible customer service to avoid taking responsibility for their product.
There is a HP rep that frequents this forum. Hopefully they will see this.
