Welcome, swb1956!

Windows Vista is fairly intuitive about which audio source it should use. For example, if you insert headphones then it should automatically switch the audio output to that port and revert back to the default audio when you remove the headphones. You should also remove the laptop from any docking station to eliminate that as a variable. There could be a rare instance of needing to update the driver which can be found on Dell’s website.

First, try the following:

1.   Double-click the speaker icon in the system tray.
2.   Click Mixer at the bottom of the speaker volume control window to display the Volume Mixer window.
3.   Verify that the audio settings slider bar is at least midway for all audio selections.
4.   If any speaker icons display a red x, click the
icon to un-mute the volume.

To Verify the Playback Device in Microsoft Windows Vista:
1.    Click the Start button and then click Control Panel.
2.    Click Hardware and Sound.
3.    In the Sound section, click Manage Audio Devices.
4.    Verify the correct playback device is selected (see image).
If you have a green checkmark next to Headphones in
the list then you need to select the internal speakers and click Set Default and then OK
If you get stuck you may want to contact your local
Geek Squad® Agent for support or call 1-800-GEEKSQUAD (1-800-423-5758).
