Hard drives can go bad for a number of reasonsirt/dust landing on the platter, magnetization, electricity surge, the read&write head can touch the platter(head crash....happens a lot), heck just use can make a hard drive go bad....usually takes a long time but they are in use all the time and spin at outrageous speeds....
Hard drives are the central storage location of files/programs/data on your pc.
