I recently purchased an Acer Aspire One, nice and small and I just love it! It does not come with a cd or dvd drive. I am wanting to add programs to it as in Quickbooks, games, etc from cd's, watch movies, and also wanting to be able to save information on my Acer to cd's. I guess what I am asking is what kind of external drive will I need to hook up with it to do all of this? Would have to be USB hook up, and something portable as this Acer will be my traveling computer. All help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Michiganflame

An LG Burner would suit you fine:
Also keep in mind, I noticed Acer does not provide recovery media for Windows XP nor did they create the option to recover from it. You have a recovery partition on the drive to restore from and thats about it.
They also load Intervideo WinDVD 5 for Windows XP on there so you can watch movies on your screen.
Its cool to see you are happy with it like I am, its become my main desktop and I kid you not! You can hook in a LCD Monitor into it and also a USB Keyboard and mouse!
I was surprised by the performance of mine, Theres a local bar I like to go to , and had the thing on at 8pm. It never quit.

Thank you! First off, I have never bought a computer without a CD drive, so all of this is new to me, so please excuse me if I sound *Dumb* about all of this....I apologize.....
An LG Burner would suit you fine:
So...this product will enable me to put a CD in and read, transfer the files to my Aspire, and also write files to a blank CD from the Aspire?
Also keep in mind, I noticed Acer does not provide recovery media for Windows XP nor did they create the option to recover from it. You have a recovery partition on the drive to restore from and thats about it.
So, what can I do to make a recovery disc?...anything at all?
I do have an external hard drive that I do back up all of my programs, pictures, etc on.
They also load Intervideo WinDVD 5 for Windows XP on there so you can watch movies on your screen.
So, all I have to do is use the LG burner and transfer the movie onto the Aspire and I'm all set to watch it?
Its cool to see you are happy with it like I am, its become my main desktop and I kid you not! You can hook in a LCD Monitor into it and also a USB Keyboard and mouse!
My Aspire came with over $400 in software in a flash drive, and also incuded a mouse, but hooking up monitor would be a plus at home.
Yes, very happy.......I also have 2 HP desktops, a Sony TX (11" screen Laptop) a Medion Laptop and a HP 17" screen Laptop. I wanted something smaller to fit in a purse, so this will be my new traveling computer, but all have CD drives installed in them, this is the first one without the drive.
I was surprised by the performance of mine, Theres a local bar I like to go to , and had the thing on at 8pm. It never quit.
This one works well for what I use it for and has the 6 cell battery in it. I just got it, haven't used it much yet until I am able to put my programs in it.

That drive allows you to Read CD's/ DVD's
It allows you to burn CD's/DVD's
The drive has Lightscribe Technology which allows you to laser etch a disc label directly onto the disc with special discs
You can use the burner to watch movies, just simply insert your favorite movie into the drive, and then WinDVD should launch and playback the movie. Keep in mind, you cant copy DVD Movies to the hard drive. It has to be in the drive at all times for playback.
Some other issues :
Yes its true , ACER did not include a way to create a recovery disc in the event a hard drive crashes. You might be able to order the discs from ACER if you are under warranty but I have yet to talk to their technical support about this. Luckily I am a college student so I get Windows XP and Windows Vista for free from Microsoft Academic Alliance.
