It's a 500GB 7200 RPM drive. A 1 or 2 GB SATA desktop drive will be an appropriate replacement and Best Buy has tons of those.

From what I can tell, that's either part of the model number, or a revision number.

Yes, that's exactly what it is. ".12" refers to the twelfth generation design. The current drives are fourteenth generation and have a "7200.14" designation.
